BJJ Sutherland

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Sutherland

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the most effective ground-based martial art in the world. Developed to allow a smaller, weaker person to defend against and submit a larger, stronger opponent — it is the foundation of modern mixed martial arts and one of the fastest growing sports on the planet.

At Reign Grappling Club, our BJJ program is built for everyone. Whether you’ve never stepped on a mat in your life or you’re a seasoned competitor chasing your next title — there’s a place for you here.

What Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

BJJ is a grappling martial art focused on ground fighting and submission wrestling. Unlike striking arts, BJJ teaches you to control and submit your opponent using technique, leverage and timing — not size or strength.

A typical BJJ class at Reign covers:

  • Technique — focused instruction on specific positions/submission
  • Drilling — practising the technique with a partner
  • Positional sparring — live rounds from specific positions
  • Free rolling — full live sparring from the standing to ground

Every class is structured, purposeful and coached — not just open mat time.

Why Train BJJ?

People come to BJJ for different reasons and stay for all of them:

Self-defence — BJJ is widely regarded as the most practical self-defence system available. The ability to control a larger aggressor on the ground is an invaluable real-world skill.

Fitness — Rolling is one of the most demanding full-body workouts you’ll find. Strength, endurance, flexibility and coordination all improve rapidly on the mat.

Competition — BJJ has a thriving competition scene at every level. From local tournaments to international championships, there’s always a next goal to chase.

Mental health — The mat demands your full attention. For one hour, nothing else exists. Many members describe BJJ as the best stress relief they’ve found.

Community — The people you train with become some of your closest friends. The bond forged through shared struggle on the mat is unlike anything else.

Gi vs No-Gi

At Reign we offer both gi and no-gi BJJ.

The Gi (traditional uniform) adds a layer of grip-based strategy — collar chokes, lapel guards and sleeve grips create a chess-like game that rewards patience and technical precision.

No-gi removes the uniform and speeds everything up — it’s more athletic, more wrestling-influenced, and closer to the format used in MMA and ADCC competition.

Most members train both. We recommend starting with Gi if you’re a complete beginner — the slower pace makes it easier to learn the fundamentals.

About Your Instructor

Kaine Wilken is the founder and head instructor of Reign Grappling Club — a highly-decorated black belt under the prestigious Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu lineage, earned under ex-UFC fighter Bernardo “Trekko” Magalhaes.

His competition record includes:

  • 🏆 IBJJF Pan Pacific Champion
  • 🏆 AFBJJ Australian National Champion
  • 🏆 AFBJJ NSW State Champion
  • 🏆 IBJJF Sydney Open Champion
  • 🏆 UAEJJ International Champion (Sydney + Melbourne)
  • 🏆 AFBJJ CUP Champion
  • 🏆 Subversion Superfight Winner

When you train at Reign you’re learning from someone who has genuinely done it at the highest level — not just held a belt long enough to open a gym.
